What 4WD and ute owners should know
Rangers, HiLuxes, Prados, Patrols and D-Maxes are bought to go somewhere that marks them: beach runs, red dirt, job sites and towing the van. That’s the point of them. What isn’t the point is bulldust, salt and scrub taking a finish that should last for years and making it look tired after one Queensland summer.
After a beach drive, salt dries into every seam, sill and mounting point and keeps drawing moisture back against the paint long after you’re home. A coated finish lets it rinse off properly instead of sitting there.
Fine dust acts like a mild abrasive the moment a mitt drags it across the panel. A coated surface lets most of it rinse off first, so far less gets ground into the clear coat at every wash.
Everything bolted to a ute sits against paint and traps grit underneath it. The areas around canopies, roof racks, tub liners and bull bar mounts are usually in worse shape than any panel, and they get extra time before anything is coated.
A tall 4WD’s roof and bonnet take Queensland UV all day and sit above eye level, so the gloss goes there first and nobody notices until it’s gone. Those are the panels worth protecting hardest.
A ceramic coating won’t stop a branch or a stone chip, and we won’t tell you it will. What it does is make mud, salt, bugs and red dirt release from the paint far more easily, so the vehicle actually gets cleaned after a trip instead of sitting dirty until the next one. Light scrub marks and wash swirls in the clear coat are polished out first, so the coating locks in a finish worth keeping.
