What Golf Caravans owners should know
Golf started out in the 1970s as a Queensland builder of tough vans for the tracks heading north, and today builds the Golf Tourer, Grand Tourer, GTX, Savannah and Maxxi ranges. Whether yours is a near-new Tourer or a Linwood from the 2000s, it'll spend most of its life parked outside in Queensland sun. Book a time, bring it in to our Ashmore workshop, and we'll take it from there.
We protect every kind of Golf Caravans:
On a recent Golf, the walls are painted aluminium skins. Once sun and grime have dulled that paint, there's no cutting it back like fibreglass, which makes the first years the ones that matter. A coating applied while the finish is still fresh is what keeps the gloss there.
If yours is an older Linwood or Savannah, its fibreglass walls and moulded front and rear have probably had years of sun. Fibreglass oxidises, going dull, then chalky and faded. How much gloss comes back depends on its condition, so we test a section first and tell you honestly what to expect.
Runoff from the roof leaves black streaks down the walls under windows, awnings and vents, and road film builds up on the front and lower panels after every trip. On a coated van it comes off with a soft wash instead of a scrubbing brush.
Many Golf Tourers run dark checker plate along the front and lower sides, with the painted panels and graphics sitting right above it. Road grime collects along that edge and streaks upward. We work the checker plate and the panel edge by hand so neither gets marked.
How your Golf is finished depends on its age. Recent Golfs use thermally bonded 30mm composite wall and roof panels with an exterior skin of painted aluminium over a closed-cell foam core. That painted aluminium can't be cut or machine polished the way fibreglass can, so it gets a careful wash, decontamination and coating. Earlier Golfs, like the Linwood and Savannah of the 2000s, were built with fibreglass side walls and moulded fibreglass front and rear panels over an aluminium frame, and fibreglass can be brought back by polishing depending on its condition.
