What riders should know

A bike isn't a small car.

There’s painted metal, plastic fairings, powder-coated frame, anodised parts, chrome and bare alloy, often within a hand’s width of each other. And one of the most popular finishes on a modern bike can be ruined by the very process that makes a car look its best.

Matte and satin finishes

Polishing matte paint flattens its texture and leaves shiny patches that don’t come back. It’s coated with a product made for matte, or it’s left alone. A machine never touches it.

Fuel on the tank

Every fill risks a run down the side of the tank, and fuel concentrates around the filler. A coating means a spill wipes off cleanly instead of etching the clear coat, but it isn’t immunity: drips still want dealing with straight away rather than at the next wash.

Heat, and what sits near it

Exhaust headers, engine cases and the panels around them run at temperatures no car panel sees. Those areas need products rated for it, and some are better left uncoated than coated with the wrong thing.

Too many surfaces, too close together

Paint, plastic, powder coat, anodising, chrome and raw alloy, all within a few centimetres. Each wants a different approach, there’s nowhere to hide an overspill, and almost all of it has to be done by hand.

Two things decide a motorbike job

The finish and the tank. Matte and satin paint can never be machine polished, and a standard gloss coating pools in its texture and leaves a patchy, uneven sheen, so it needs a product made for matte. The tank gets fuel run down it at the servo. A coating gives real resistance, but it buys time rather than immunity. And like any coating, it won’t stop a stone chip or a scratch from a dropped bike.

Our answer: we confirm the finish first, then coat every surface by hand with the right Fireball product.

How the job runs

How We Prepare a Bike Before It's Coated

Finish type is confirmed before anything mechanical happens, and almost every step is done by hand. How long a bike needs with us depends on the bike and its finish.

  1. 01Confirm the finish on every painted part: gloss, matte or satin.
  2. 02Wash and decontaminate by hand, panel by panel.
  3. 03Gloss paint on the tank and fairings refined by hand or machine where it needs it.
  4. 04Matte and satin paint: no correction stage at all. Cleaned, decontaminated and coated with a matte-compatible product.
  5. 05Careful masking around exhausts, engine cases and anything that runs hot.
  6. 06Extra attention to the tank and filler surround where fuel runs.
  7. 07Each surface coated by hand with the product that suits it, then a walk-around and your aftercare guide.

Questions Riders Ask

Can’t see yours? Call or text and you’ll get a straight answer.

Can you coat a matte bike?

Yes, with a coating made for matte and no correction stage. A machine never touches matte or satin paint, and a standard gloss coating isn’t used on it because it leaves a patchy sheen.

Will the coating protect the tank from fuel?

It helps a spill wipe off cleanly instead of etching the clear coat, but it isn’t immunity. Drips still want wiping straight away rather than at the next wash.

Do you do the frame, wheels and exhaust?

Painted and powder-coated parts and wheels, yes, each with the product that suits it. Exhausts and engine cases run hot, and some of those surfaces are better left uncoated than coated with the wrong thing.

Will it stop stone chips?

No. No coating stops a stone chip or a scratch. What it does is make the bike far easier to keep clean.

How long is the warranty?

There’s no set period for motorbikes. The coating is matched to your bike’s finish when we inspect it, and we’ll explain what to expect with your price.

How long will it be with you?

It depends on the bike and its finish. You’ll get a timeframe with your price.

Can you come to me?

No. Book a time and bring it in to our Ashmore workshop.

Do you take Afterpay?

Yes.
