Jet Ski ceramic coating on the Gold Coast

It spends more time in the sun on a trailer than it does on the water.
A jet ski gets used for a few hours at a weekend and sits out in the sun for the rest of the week. That is the wrong way around for a hull. Most of the fading and chalking we are asked to fix did not happen while anyone was riding it.

What Jet Ski paint is actually like

Not every ski is gelcoat. Sea-Doo builds a number of models with Polytec, a moulded composite rather than a fibreglass-and-gelcoat hull, and it does not respond to the same products or the same cutting. Traditional gelcoat hulls fade, chalk and oxidise in the familiar way. Working out which one is in front of us is the first step, because a process that restores gelcoat can permanently mark a composite hull.

What we see most on Jet Ski

Chalking on the bottom hull

Without UV protection the underside fades, chalks and oxidises - and because nobody looks at the bottom of a ski until it is on the trailer nose-up, it is usually well advanced before it gets noticed. It hurts how the ski looks and what it is worth.

Composite hulls need different treatment

Polytec and similar moulded hulls are not gelcoat and cannot be wet sanded and cut back the way gelcoat can. Getting this wrong is not a setback, it is permanent - which is why we identify the material before we choose a process.

Salt left to dry

Most owners flush the engine religiously and give the hull a quick hose. Salt that dries on the surface keeps drawing moisture back against it long after the ski is home, and that is what accelerates the surface breaking down.

Trailer bunks and loading marks

Bunk carpet holds grit, and every load and unload drags it along the same strips of hull. Combined with sun damage on the same surfaces, the underside takes more wear than the deck ever does.

Our process

How we prep a Jet Ski before coating

Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.
  1. 01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
  2. 02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
  3. 03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
  4. 04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
  5. 05Hull material identified first - gelcoat, composite or painted - and the process chosen to suit it. On a composite hull that means no wet sanding and a far gentler approach than a fibreglass ski of the same age would get.
  6. 06Extra attention to the bottom hull and the strips that sit on the trailer bunks, where UV damage and loading wear land on the same surfaces.
  7. 07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
  8. 08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
  9. 09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
