What Audi paint is actually like

Audi's factory finish is widely reported by owners as soft and chip-prone. The most telling account is from an A5 owner who drove the same routes as a BMW 3 Series and a Suzuki Vitara, and found ten times as many chips on the Audi at a tenth of the mileage. Others describe bonnets needing repaint within months, and clear coat that scratches easily during normal washing. Solid, non-metallic colours are reported as the weakest of the range.

What we see most on Audi

Stone chips, far beyond the norm

The dominant Audi complaint. Owners report chip counts on the bonnet and front bar that they have not seen on any other car they have owned, some severe enough to warrant repainting the bonnet inside the first few months.

Do it before it needs paint, not after

Owners have reported protection shops declining to work on a car until the front end and bonnet were repainted first, because there is no point putting a protective layer over damage. That repaint comes out of the owner's pocket. Protecting a clean nose is dramatically cheaper than restoring a chipped one.

Clear coat that scratches in a wash

Soft clear coat and a sponge is all it takes. Owners describe surface scratching appearing within the first year of normal cleaning, before an automatic car wash is even involved.

Solid colours are the weakest

The non-metallic finishes in the range draw the most complaints. They also show damage most plainly, because there is no metallic flake to break up how light falls across a mark.

How we prep a Audi before coating

01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
05Light correction with finishing pads. Audi clear coat gives up defects readily, so the discipline is knowing when to stop rather than how hard to push.
06Extra attention to the bonnet, front bar, mirror caps and the leading edge of the roof, which is where Audi owners report the chipping concentrating.
07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
