What Mercedes-Benz owners should know
The GLC was Mercedes-Benz's best seller in Australia last year and it's the Mercedes we're asked about most, but the same badge sits on AMG performance cars, an electric EQ range and the Vito and Sprinter vans working across the Gold Coast. Mercedes builds a tough clear coat on its cars, but it still swirls, water-spots and etches in Gold Coast sun, and it takes time and the right approach to correct properly before it's coated.

Detailers describe newer Mercedes clear coat as hard, which is good for daily life and slow work for anyone polishing it. A Mercedes that comes back from a rushed correction still swirled usually wasn't given enough time.
Obsidian Black, Graphite Grey and the darker metallics show every swirl and water spot in direct sun. Most of those marks go in at the car wash, not on the road.
AMG models and AMG Line packs wear gloss black grilles, mirror caps and window trims that scratch far more easily than the panels around them and show every mark. They need different products and a lighter hand than the bodywork.
Electric Mercedes models carry cameras, sensors and a charge port flap that are masked and worked around by hand, never machined or coated over. A Vito or Sprinter has big flat panels that show every wash mark, and a coated van stays presentable between washes.
Mercedes-Benz passenger cars have used a clear coat containing ceramic nanoparticles since 2003-04, developed to resist car-wash scratches and hold its gloss longer than conventional clear. Detailers find newer Mercedes clear coat quite hard. Harder isn't scratch-proof, though: wash swirls, water spots and bird-dropping etching still build up, and hard clear coat takes more time and more careful product choice to correct properly. Matte 'magno' finishes can't be machine-polished like gloss paint, so we look at those in person first.
