Ford ceramic coating on the Gold Coast

Australia's best-selling ute, and a finish that rewards a close look.
We see more Rangers than almost anything else, and they arrive in every condition from delivery-fresh to five years of job sites. The common thread is that Ford's factory finish is worth inspecting properly before anything goes on top of it, because a surprising number of the defects on these vehicles came with them.

What Ford paint is actually like

Ford has a long-running record of paint complaints across the Ranger, F-Series, Bronco and Mustang, tracked by consumer safety advocates rather than just owners. Two distinct problems show up: stone chipping at very low mileage, and factory clear coat faults - runs and clumps of clear at panel corners, and in some cases scratches that were clear-coated straight over at the plant. The second kind matters most, because a defect underneath the clear coat cannot be polished out.

Common issues

What we see most on Ford

Stone chips almost immediately

One owner reported excessive chipping on a new Ranger at 600 miles, saying they had never seen a vehicle collect stone damage like it. The Ranger's tall, flat nose puts a lot of surface directly in the firing line.

Defects underneath the clear coat

Owners have found scratches that were clear-coated over at the factory, and clear coat that dripped and pooled at panel corners badly enough to chip away and expose bare metal. Anything under the clear cannot be corrected - it can only be identified honestly and, if it matters enough, repainted.

Peeling on older vehicles

Paint peel is a documented pattern across several Ford model lines over many years. On an older Ranger or Mustang it is the first thing worth checking, because coating over paint that is already letting go achieves nothing.

Canopy, rack and tub contact

Canopies, roof racks, bull bars and tub liners all sit against paint and all trap grit underneath. On a working ute these mounting points are usually in far worse condition than the panels around them, and they are the areas nobody photographs.

Our process

How we prep a Ford before coating

Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.
  1. 01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
  2. 02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
  3. 03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
  4. 04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
  5. 05A full inspection for factory clear coat faults before correction begins - runs, pooling and anything trapped beneath the clear. Knowing what is under the surface decides what correction can honestly achieve on the panels above it.
  6. 06Extra attention to the bonnet and front bar where chipping concentrates, and to the areas beneath canopies, racks and bull bar mounts.
  7. 07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
  8. 08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
  9. 09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
