BYD ceramic coating on the Gold Coast

The thing to check on a BYD is underneath the paint.
BYD has gone from unknown to everywhere on the Gold Coast in a very short time, and most of what we see is close to new. The paint itself behaves much like any modern EV. The one issue that has come up locally is different in kind: corrosion beginning beneath the surface rather than damage arriving on it.

What BYD paint is actually like

BYD's finish is a typical modern EV system - thin by historical standards, like almost everything built now. What sets the make apart in Australia is a small number of reported rust cases on the Atto 3, which owners and commentators attributed to metal preparation before painting rather than to the paint itself. The reports have been described as few and far between and BYD responded to them promptly, so this is not a reason to avoid the car. It is a reason to look properly before coating one.

What we see most on BYD

Corrosion starting from beneath

A number of Australian Atto 3 owners reported rust, with the likely cause identified as preparation of the metal before paint went on. It appears to affect a small proportion of cars and BYD has responded to the cases raised - but it is worth a look, because it is the one paint-related fault that starts on the inside.

A coating cannot stop rust from underneath

This is the honest limit. Ceramic coating protects a surface from what lands on it - UV, contamination, water spotting. It has no effect at all on corrosion working its way outward from bare metal beneath the paint. If we find blistering we will point it out and tell you to raise it with BYD, not sell you a coating over it.

Thin modern paint systems

Electric vehicles across the industry have moved to thinner, lower-solvent paint. It corrects less forgivingly than the thick finishes of twenty years ago, so measuring before machine work matters more than it used to.

Salt in the air accelerates corrosion anywhere paint is already compromised - a stone chip through to metal, a scratched sill, an unsealed edge. On the coast, small paint damage becomes a rust problem much faster than it does inland.

Our process

How we prep a BYD before coating

Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.
  1. 01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
  2. 02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
  3. 03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
  4. 04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
  5. 05A full inspection for blistering, bubbling or corrosion working outward before any correction is planned. On a BYD that check comes before everything else, because it is the one finding that changes the recommendation entirely.
  6. 06Extra attention to seams, edges, wheel arches and the tailgate - the places corrosion starts - and any stone chip that has gone through to bare metal.
  7. 07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
  8. 08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
  9. 09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
