What BYD owners should know
BYD went from newcomer to Australia's eighth-biggest car brand in 2025, led by the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute, the electric Sealion 7 and the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid. The range now runs from the Dolphin and Atto 2 around town to the Seal sedan and the Sealion 8 SUV, and most BYDs on the Gold Coast are still close to new, which is the best time to clear the delivery marks and get the paint protected.
We protect every kind of BYD:
New cars are shipped, stored in yards and given a quick pre-delivery wash before you collect them. Fine scratches and bonded fallout are often already in the paint on day one, and they're far easier to deal with before a coating goes on than after.
A Shark 6 that tows, carts gear or does beach runs gets mud, salt and sand on it. A coated finish lets that rinse off instead of being scrubbed into the paint every time it's washed.
A small number of Australian Atto 3 owners have reported rust, which commentators put down to metal preparation before painting. Reports are few and far between, and owners have taken them back to BYD under warranty. A coating can't fix anything coming from underneath, so if we find bubbling we'll show you and tell you to raise it with BYD before anything goes on.
BYD's electric and plug-in cars mostly live outside and go through the car wash, so the darker colours swirl quickly and the roof and bonnet take the sun. Their cameras and sensors are masked and worked around by hand, never machined or coated over.
A BYD leaves the factory with a modern colour coat under a clear coat, like almost every new car built today. It polishes up well, but left bare it starts collecting wash swirls from the first few car washes, and Queensland UV dulls the horizontal panels from the first summer. Every BYD gets a full inspection and paint depth readings before any machine work, so the correction suits the car in front of us.
