Kia EV ceramic coating on the Gold Coast

Measured thin - not just reported thin.
Kia's electric range is one of the few where owners have put a gauge on the problem rather than just complaining about it. If you have a new EV6 or EV9, the case for protecting the paint before the first Queensland summer is stronger than on almost anything else we coat.

Paint profile

What Kia EV paint is actually like

Kia EV owners report the factory finish as unusually thin, and at least one has measured it: around 40 microns on an EV6 bonnet, against 120 to 180 microns measured on a Volkswagen Tiguan for comparison. That is a single owner's reading rather than a published specification, but it matches what owners describe - front ends and painted plastic trims that chip very easily. Thin paint changes the job completely, because a normal correction removes clear coat that a car like this cannot spare.

Common issues

What we see most on Kia EV

Chipping on the front end

The most common complaint across the range. Bonnets, front bars and the leading edge of the roof collect chips at mileages where a thicker finish would still be clean.

Painted plastic trims

The painted plastic sections around the bumpers and lower body chip as readily as the panels, and they sit exactly where road debris hits hardest.

Very little margin for correction

If a bonnet really is carrying around 40 microns of total film, there is not much clear coat sitting on top of the colour. Machine correction removes clear coat by design - so on these cars the honest answer is often to protect rather than to correct.

Touch-up paint that does not fill

Owners report the factory touch-up paint as thin and watery - it runs rather than building up in a chip. Worth knowing before you try to fix a stone chip yourself and end up with a bigger mark than you started with.

Our process

How we prep a Kia EV before coating

Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.
  1. 01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
  2. 02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
  3. 03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
  4. 04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
  5. 05Depth readings first, then the minimum correction the paint can safely give. On a Kia EV that frequently means a single refining pass rather than a full correction - there is no point winning back some gloss at the cost of the clear coat that is protecting the colour.
  6. 06Extra attention to the bonnet, front bar and painted plastic trims, and careful masking around sensor and camera housings.
  7. 07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
  8. 08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
  9. 09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
