Tesla ceramic coating on the Gold Coast

Measured thinner and softer than the industry standard - by an independent inspection.
Most paint reputations are built on owner impressions. Tesla's is unusual because somebody put instruments on it. An independent inspection measured the paint thickness and the surface hardness, and both came back below what the rest of the industry considers normal. That is worth knowing before anyone puts a machine polisher near one.

What Tesla paint is actually like

A widely reported independent inspection of a Model 3 measured paint averaging around 106 microns and dropping into the low 70s in places, against a typical industry range of roughly 110 to 150. The same inspection assessed surface hardness by pencil test at F - several grades softer than the 2H to 3H common across the industry. Thin and soft together is the hardest combination to work with: it marks easily and there is very little clear coat to correct into.

Common issues

What we see most on Tesla

Measurably thin

Readings in the low 70 micron range on a car where 110 to 150 is normal leaves very little working margin. It is the reason we measure a Tesla panel by panel rather than assuming, and the reason a full correction is often the wrong recommendation.

Measurably soft

A pencil hardness of F against an industry norm of 2H to 3H means the surface gives way to contact that most cars would shrug off. Wash technique, drying technique and what the car is parked under all matter more on a Tesla than on almost anything else.

Defects that came from the factory

Inspections routinely turn up dust nibs, orange peel and sanding marks in Tesla factory paint. Some of that can be refined out; some of it is under the clear and cannot. It is worth having a new car looked at properly so you know which is which.

Early chipping

Chipping is a common complaint, and it is the predictable consequence of a thin, soft finish on a car driven at highway speeds. In fairness, the heaviest complaints have come from cold-climate markets where grit and salt are used on roads - conditions the Gold Coast does not have.

Our process

How we prep a Tesla before coating

Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.
  1. 01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
  2. 02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
  3. 03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
  4. 04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
  5. 05Depth readings taken panel by panel and correction kept to the absolute minimum. On a finish measuring in the 70s, a conventional correction can remove a meaningful share of what is protecting the colour - so refining and protecting usually beats chasing perfection.
  6. 06Extra attention to the bonnet and front bar, a proper inspection for factory defects under the clear coat, and careful masking around every camera and sensor housing.
  7. 07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
  8. 08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
  9. 09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
