What Mitsubishi paint is actually like

Australian Triton owners describe clear coat turning white - a milky clouding across a panel that gets mistaken for a stain or hard water marking. It is neither. It is the clear coat breaking down, and once it has gone that far it does not polish back. Owners have also observed Mitsubishi reducing paint and clear coat thickness over successive models, which shows up as thin film on relatively new vehicles.

What we see most on Mitsubishi

Clear coat clouding to white

The distinctive Mitsubishi symptom, reported on Tritons by Australian owners. A panel goes milky rather than peeling, and because it looks like contamination people keep trying to wash it off. Caught very early some of it can be cut back; past that point the panel needs paint.

Thin film on newer vehicles

One owner reported a 2023 black Triton at 40,000km with extensive stone chips and paint they described as paper-thin underneath. On a recent vehicle that limits correction severely - there is simply not much material there to work with.

Older Tritons and Pajeros

Clear coat degradation has been reported on Tritons at around eight to ten years old, and on Pajeros by the Australian club forums. That is well within the life these vehicles are kept for on the Gold Coast.

Dark colours on older cars

Darker Mitsubishis from the older model years drew the most complaints. Owners generally report the newer vehicles as better in this respect, but a dark car from that era is worth inspecting carefully before anything is spent on it.

Our process

How we prep a Mitsubishi before coating

Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.

01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
05Panels checked specifically for clear coat clouding before correction. Milky clear coat is a failure rather than a contaminant, and knowing which one you are looking at decides whether the panel gets polished or gets an honest conversation.
06Extra attention to the bonnet, roof and tub or tailgate edges, where thin film and clear coat breakdown show first.
07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
