Honda ceramic coating on the Gold Coast

A make with a known clear coat history - and a good reason to protect it early.

Hondas get kept. They are bought to last, they hold up mechanically, and plenty of the ones we see are ten years old and still the family car. The paint is the part that ages first, and Honda has a longer public record of clear coat trouble than most makes.

What Honda paint is actually like

Owners have reported thin clear coat on Hondas for two decades, and Honda itself extended paint warranty coverage on Civics built 2006-2012 after clear coat failures traced to application at the Canadian plant. Newer Hondas are a different story, but the pattern is well enough documented that we check clear coat depth on any Honda before correcting it.

Common issues

What we see most on Honda

Clear coat fading then peeling

The reported pattern is consistent: a patch goes dull or lighter than the panel around it, then the clear coat lifts and takes the colour with it. Owners most often describe it on the bonnet, roof, guards and boot - the panels that face the sun.

Horizontal panels first

Roof, bonnet and boot take the UV load. On a car that lives outside on the Gold Coast, those three panels will always be the ones that go first, and they are the ones worth protecting hardest.

Wash swirls on dark colours

Honda's darker greys, blues and blacks show every swirl from an automatic car wash. The marks are in the clear coat, so they polish out - but only if there is clear coat left to polish.

Older cars already past correcting

If clear coat has already lifted, no coating fixes it. On an older Honda we will tell you honestly whether it is a coating job or a repaint job before you spend anything.

Our process

How we prep a Honda before coating

Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.

01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
05Clear coat depth measured before correction. On any Honda showing early dulling we correct lightly or not at all - cutting into failing clear coat accelerates exactly what you are trying to prevent.
06Extra attention to the bonnet, roof and boot, the panels Honda owners report failing first.
07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
