What Subaru owners should know
Subarus get driven the way they were built to be driven. Outbacks and Foresters make up most of the Subaru enquiries we get, alongside Crosstreks, WRXs and Imprezas, and the range now takes in the Forester Hybrid and the electric Solterra and Trailseeker. Nearly all of them live outside. That's the appeal of the make, and it's also why the paint deserves proper protection rather than whatever the car wash leaves behind.
We protect every kind of Subaru:
Dust, mud and salt end up along the lower doors, sills and rear bar. A coated surface rinses clean far more easily. It won't stop a stone chip, but it makes chips easier to spot and deal with early.
Roof bars, bike racks and rooftop tents scuff the roof and the rails around them, and grit trapped under a crossbar grinds in every time it moves. It's one of the few places on an SUV that almost never gets washed properly.
Subaru's electric and hybrid models carry cameras and sensors front and rear, and the Solterra and Trailseeker have a charge port that gets opened every day. Everything sensitive is masked and worked around by hand, never machined or coated over, and a coated finish rinses clean far easier around them.
On an older car that's lived outside, we check the clear coat before anything else. If it has already started to lift, no coating will bring it back - that's a repaint, and we'll tell you so before you spend anything.
Like most new cars, a Subaru leaves the factory with a modern colour coat under a clear coat. It corrects well, but a car that sees dirt roads, roof racks and Queensland sun loses its gloss faster than one that only sees a garage and a commute. On older cars we measure the clear coat before deciding how much correction is sensible.
