Subaru ceramic coating on the Gold Coast

Bought to be used - which is exactly why the paint needs help.
Subarus get driven the way they were built to be driven: gravel roads, boat ramps, roof racks loaded up for the weekend. That is the appeal, and it is also why the paint on a five-year-old Forester rarely looks like the paint on a five-year-old car that only ever saw a garage and a commute.

What Subaru paint is actually like

Subaru's factory finish has a long tail of owner complaints about clear coat durability - peeling and flaking reported across Forester, Outback, Ascent and Crosstrek, sometimes within the first few years. It is not universal, but it is common enough that we check the clear coat carefully before we touch a Subaru, rather than assuming there is depth to work with.

Common issues

What we see most on Subaru

Clear coat peeling and flaking

The most reported Subaru paint issue by a distance. Owners describe it starting as a small patch - often on the roof, bonnet or around wheel nuts - and spreading. Once clear coat has let go, coating over it will not bring it back; it needs repainting. We would rather tell you that on day one than coat over a problem.

Gravel and stone chipping

Anything driven on dirt and gravel collects chips along the lower doors, sills and front bar. Coating will not stop a stone, but it makes the surface easier to keep clean so chips get spotted and sealed before they rust.

Roof rail and load marks

Roof bars, bike racks and rooftop tents scuff the roof and the rails around them, and grit trapped under a crossbar grinds in every time it moves. It is one of the few places on an SUV that almost never gets washed properly.

UV on the roof and bonnet

Queensland sun works hardest on the horizontal panels. On a car parked outside - which most Subarus are - the roof and bonnet dull years before the doors do.

Our process

How we prep a Subaru before coating

Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.
  1. 01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
  2. 02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
  3. 03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
  4. 04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
  5. 05Paint depth checked panel by panel before any machine work. On a Subaru that reading decides the job: where the clear coat is thin or already failing, we correct conservatively or not at all rather than cutting through it.
  6. 06Extra attention to the roof, bonnet and the area around the roof rails, where UV and trapped grit do the most damage.
  7. 07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
  8. 08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
  9. 09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
