Black, grey and the deeper blues across the range, from a Polo to a Golf R, look sharp clean and show every wash mark in Gold Coast sun. Most of those swirls go in at the car wash, not on the road.
An Amarok that tows, carries gear or does beach runs gets mud, salt and sand on it. A coated finish lets that rinse off instead of being scrubbed into the paint at every wash.
A GTI or Golf R usually gets washed by hand and wiped down between drives, and a dry cloth on a dusty panel puts fine scratches in faster than the road does. A coated finish rinses clean, so it gets washed properly instead of dusted.
A Transporter, Crafter or Caddy has big flat panels that show every wash mark, and a coated van stays presentable between washes for the business it represents. The electric ID.4, ID.5 and ID. Buzz carry cameras and sensors that are masked and worked around by hand, never machined or coated over.
Like most new cars, a Volkswagen leaves the factory with a modern colour coat under a clear coat. It corrects beautifully, but it re-marks just as readily if it's left bare: wash swirls, water spots and the slow loss of gloss on the roof and bonnet under Queensland UV. That's the case for correcting it properly and then putting something harder on top.
