What Volkswagen paint is actually like

Owners consistently describe Volkswagen paint as soft - easy to swirl in a wash bay, and prone to stone chips on the bonnet and front bar well before you would expect. Soft is not the same as thin: there is usually reasonable film thickness to work with, it just marks readily. The upside is that it corrects well; the downside is that it re-marks just as fast, which is the whole argument for putting something harder on top of it.

Stone chips on the nose

The most common Volkswagen complaint by far. Owners report chips accumulating on the bonnet and front bar within the first year - some from road stones, some from nothing more than insect strikes at highway speed.

Swirl marks in the clear coat

Soft clear coat and automatic car washes are a bad combination. On Deep Black, Moonstone Grey and the darker blues the swirls are obvious the moment the car sits in direct sun.

Soft bumper and fascia paint

Painted plastic on the bumpers and fascias is softer again than the panels, and it sits exactly where trolley knocks, kerb rash and car park contact happen.

Marks appearing again after correction

Soft paint polishes up beautifully and then collects fresh swirls just as fast if it is left bare. Correction without a coating on a Volkswagen buys you months, not years.

Our process

How we prep a Volkswagen before coating

Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.

01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
05Correction with finishing pads and a light cut. Volkswagen clear coat cuts quickly, so the risk is taking too much rather than too little - we clear the defects and stop there.
06Extra attention to the bonnet, front bar and mirror caps, where chipping and stone damage concentrate.
07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
