BMW is the make where experience counts for least and testing counts for most. Clear coat hardness swings dramatically between colours and even between individual cars, so the only way to know what a particular BMW needs is to try a section and find out.

What BMW paint is actually like

BMW clear coat is notoriously inconsistent. Detailers report Sapphire Black as consistently very hard and Jet Black as soft - two blacks on the same badge behaving in opposite ways - and note that hardness has also tracked with where the car was assembled. There is a further quirk worth knowing: BMW paint can be hard to correct and still be easily marred, so it resists the polisher while remaining vulnerable to bird droppings, towels and solvents.

What we see most on BMW

You cannot guess the hardness

The same model in two colours can need completely different products. Reaching for an aggressive compound on a car that only needed a light polish removes clear coat for no reason; reaching for a light polish on hard clear coat wastes a day and fixes nothing.

Hard to correct, easy to mark

An unusual combination, and the one that catches owners out. A BMW can shrug off a polisher and still take a permanent etch from a bird dropping left on a hot bonnet for an afternoon. Hard does not mean tough.

Bird lime and sap in a Queensland summer

Given how readily this paint marrs, anything acidic sitting on a hot panel is the real enemy. A coated surface gives you a buffer and a much better chance of removing it cleanly before it etches.

Stone chips and dings

Owners report BMW paint as sensitive to chipping despite the hardness. The nose, mirror caps and the leading edge of the roof take the worst of it on any car driven at highway speed.

Our process

How we prep a BMW before coating

Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.

01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
05A test section before anything else, and a willingness to change the plan. On a BMW we establish what this specific car's clear coat responds to and work from that - never from what the last one in the same colour needed.
06Extra attention to the bonnet, roof and boot, where marring and etching from bird lime and sap concentrate.
07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
