Lexus ceramic coating on the Gold Coast

Among the softest paint of any make - a drying towel is enough to mark it.
Lexus builds a beautifully finished car with paint that will not tolerate being handled carelessly. Owners consistently rank it among the softest anywhere, soft enough that the microfibre used to dry it can put swirls in it. Nothing about that is a defect - it just means how the car is washed matters enormously.

What Lexus paint is actually like

Lexus clear coat is repeatedly described by detailers as extremely soft - among the softest of any manufacturer. The practical consequences are specific: it marks from drying towels, it swirls from ordinary washing, and it needs very little cutting to correct. Some newer models carry a self-healing clear coat, which helps with the finest marks but does not prevent swirls and scratches from forming or clear the deeper ones.

What we see most on Lexus

Marks from drying, not just washing

Most cars are marked by the wash. A Lexus can be marked by the dry. Detailers warn that even careful microfibre work will swirl this paint if the technique is not right, which puts drying method near the top of the list for anyone keeping one nice.

Self-healing paint is not a coating

The self-healing clear coat on newer models can close up the very finest marks with heat. It will not stop swirls forming, it will not remove a proper scratch, and it is not a substitute for protecting the surface. Worth knowing before relying on it.

Black and the dark colours

Soft paint plus a dark colour is the least forgiving combination there is. On a black Lexus in direct sun, light scratches and swirls are visible from across a car park.

Damage from repeated compounding

One owner described how much rubbing compound had gone into keeping their car looking decent. That is the trap with soft paint: every round of compounding removes clear coat permanently, so chasing marks repeatedly costs you the very layer that is protecting the colour.

Our process

How we prep a Lexus before coating

Preparation is the job. The coating is the last hour of it.
  1. 01Full inspection under LED and swirl-finder lighting, with paint depth readings recorded panel by panel.
  2. 02Two-bucket hand wash, wheels and arches degreased, badges and shuts cleaned out.
  3. 03Chemical iron and industrial fallout removal, then a clay treatment to lift bonded contamination.
  4. 04Tape-up of trim, rubbers and sensitive edges before any machine work.
  5. 05The lightest correction that works, usually a single refining pass. Lexus paint gives defects up with almost no cutting, so anything more aggressive is spending clear coat you will want in five years.
  6. 06Extra attention to the horizontal panels, and a handover that covers wash and dry technique specifically - on this paint that is doing as much work as the coating is.
  7. 07Panel wipe with a coating-safe solvent to strip polishing oils and reveal the true finish.
  8. 08Fireball ceramic coating applied by hand, levelled panel by panel under controlled lighting.
  9. 09IR / controlled cure, then a final inspection and handover pack with aftercare instructions.
